Congressman Ron Paul finished at 5th place and that is, to me, fairly impressive. He beat some people who had spent a lot more time in the state. He's got the biggest fan base in the country when it comes to the net roots, yet they are also willing to mobilize on the ground at events as noted by the incredible amounts of energy that they produced yesterday. There are many Republicans in this state, some of whom have a high degree of influence, who have tried to write Paul off or characterize him as a fringe status candidate. I know of several people who voted for Paul yesterday because they are tired of "Big Government Republicanism" and these are the same 'mainstream' types that voted for George Bush. I'm sure there are some of his supporters who had hoped for a little more(perhaps a spot or two higher), but they have to be pleased that Ron is in a position to grow. His speech yesterday was dynamic and his credibility on issues like government spending are second to none. Ron owns the libertarian oriented wing of the Republican Party and because of that, should not be written off. If he were to come and campaign more in Iowa, I think he could become the new dark horse to watch.
